The road to hell…
Well, there is no road to hell.
I already live there.

I was forced to partake in a rigged game of seduction, manipulation, and murder.

Mateo Remmington is my formidable opponent.

He makes the devil look like a saint.

He’s immoral.
He’s ruthless.
He’s a goddamnking.

King of a clandestine empire who sits on a throne covered in innocents’ blood.

I’ve become his obsession.
He’s becoming my deadly addiction.

And if I make one wrong move he’ll end my life.

I LOVE Natalie Bennett’s brand of dark. After reading her Badlands series, I knew she was going to be my new favorite dark queen. And although Queen of Diamonds isn’t quite on the same level of dark as The Badlands…at least not yet…I think it’s heading there.

For most of this book I was left scratching my head unable to figure out what kind of game was being played. She keeps throwing little breadcrumbs to keep the element of suspense perfectly paced.

Elena is back in town after being sent away for years by her father, only to find her Aunt murdered and her sister missing. She catches the eye of kingpin, Mateo Remmington, and figures she has her “in” to find out what has happened to her. But Mateo has his own agenda with Elena, only we aren’t quite sure exactly what that is yet… but he wants her to play a game.

I love Mateo’s character. I don’t know whether to be turned on by him or to be scared of him after all the acid baths, chainsaw massacres, and body parts being dismantled.

And Elena is a bit of an enigma for me. Is she really that naive, or is she only pretending to be a pawn in this game? I think her character is really going to surprise me in the upcoming books and I can’t WAIT for King of Diamonds because the fuckery is only just getting started and I’m anxious to see what Natalie Bennett has up her sleeve.
